Talk on Northeye Prison by Barry Wilkinson

Thursday 21st January 2016

A very entertaining talk on North Eye Prison from Barry Wilkinson. Barry talked about his career in the Prison Service which included 30 years at our "local" prison, North Eye. Built on the site of the RAF Wartling accommodation site, this was a category C establishment for relatively low risk prisoners. Barry talked about the opportunities the inmates had for educating themselves, learning trades etc. A feature of prison life in the 1960s to 1980s was self sufficiency. They grew their own vegetables, made clothes, furniture etc. The prison was eventually closed following a serious disturbance in May 1986 when inmates set fire to the buildings.
